Yucca Plant

All about the yucca plant

The yucca plant is a perennial shrub that makes for great ground cover in any garden.  This type of plant is evergreen and has strong, pointed leaves that stick straight up from the center of the plant.  The yucca plant can range in height from 30 centimeters tall to two and a half meters high.  They typically have flowers in the summer, and these flowers usually last into the fall.  The yucca flower is a large white bloom that stands out vividly from the rest of the plant.  Some yucca plants also bear fruit and seeds.  Yucca plants grow in many different climates, so you will find it very easy to maintain this type of plant no matter where you live.

The most common use for the yucca plant is as an ornamental plant in the garden.  The easiest way to grow your yucca plants is by purchasing the plants from a garden store.  You can also choose to grow from cuttings of another yucca plant.  If you must grow your yucca plant from a seed, then you should do it indoors and start out in a pot.  You may even decide to keep your yucca plant indoors after you’ve begun because they also make a great addition to just about any indoor décor.  Just remember that your yucca plant will get very large, so you need a big space to keep it in.

One of the most important steps in caring for yucca plants is pruning them.  Use a sharp pair of pruning shears to cut off the top of the plant.  You will need a good pair of gardening gloves to keep the plant from damaging your hands and fingers.  Make sure you keep the plant in direct sunlight after you trim it to help the plant replenish itself.  The best time to prune a yucca plant is in early spring, which is also right before it goes into its growing time.  You can cut off as much as half of the plant if you wish.  You may wish to pull the plant out of the pot in order to prune it.  Then you can just repot the plant after you cut off the top part of it.

You may also wish to use your one yucca plant to make even more plants.  The simplest way to do this is to use the top part of the plant you just pruned off.  Just cut off the leafy top of the plant and place the trunk in some potting soil.  It won’t be long before the plant grows roots and starts producing new leaves.

Don’t be afraid to trim the flowers of your yucca plant if you want some flowers for a vase inside your home.  Trimming the flowers any time will not hurt them, and they will grow back.  Overall, yucca plants are very easy to care for, and they will deliver beautiful flowers every year as long as you trim them once a year before their growing time.
